Progressive Dinner (Hosts Needed!)

In conjunction with Luminaria 2007, we are excited to once again coordinate the University Heights Progressive Dinner Party on Sunday, December 16. EVERYONE is invited and you do not have to host to attend.
Here's how it works:
5:30pm - 6:30: Cocktails (four hosts needed)
6:45 - 7:45: Soup/salad (four to six hosts needed)
8:00 - 9:00: Everyone will end up at one BIG house for dessert
You will go to three different homes in the neighborhood and bring a dish and beverage to one of your host's homes. You will receive all your assignments in a confirmation letter or e-mail that arrives a few days before the event.
This is a great opportunity to meet new neighbors and see friends you've been missing. Encourage your friends and neighbors to attend!

Jazz on Thanksgiving Weekend

Jazz musician and former Heights resident Jeremy Davenport will play at Jazz St. Louis over Thanksgiving weekend. He will be playing his regular homecoming concerts on Friday and Sat. night -- 2 sets each night. This year he has added a fundraising concert on the Sunday afternoon to benefit The Pancreatic Foundation in honor of Ed Murray, one of Jeremy's favorite teachers when he was at Brittany Woods, who died of pancreatic cancer. Tickets can be purchased through Metrotix or Jazz St. Louis.

Speed Bumps – The Trial

Most of you have probably noticed the new speed bumps on Yale. They are here on a trial basis in response to the years of requests from many neighbors to do something to reduce the speeding in and out of the neighborhood. If speed bumps are the right answer to this issue we think they would also be needed on Trinity, Harvard and at the Princeton end of Cornell. Before we remove them or add to them we would like to hear from you. So far, the feedback we have received has been strongly positive. No one thinks the speed bumps are beautiful but many think they achieve a desired end.

In deciding to test speed bumps, we considered a number of issues. First of all, we ascertained that the police and fire departments are not opposed to speed bumps. On those (typically few) occasions when our streets need to be plowed, speed bumps will slow the plow down since it has to be raised and lowered at each bump. The speed bumps are configured with a gap in the middle of the street and to each side to allow bicycles and the like to pass unimpeded and to allow water, leaves and such to flow freely to the storm sewers.

We considered alternatives to the speed bumps. Horses are unattractive, restrict parking, get crashed into or moved and cause people to swerve into oncoming traffic. As for increased police patrols for speeding or for failure to stop at our stop signs, this can help, but the police cannot be in here all the time. The police also discourage residents from stopping and lecturing neighbors or strangers who are speeding.

We look forward to hearing your opinions and will listen carefully to every opinion expressed. It is worth noting that the Board of the University Heights Association voted enthusiastically to pay for one of the speed bumps in order to show their support. web@universityheightsonline.org

recycling update

UPDATE regarding the blue and yellow bins.
The city has indicated that residents can keep the old bins for whatever purpose you want.  However, if you would like them to be recycled, put them on your curb on Tuesday, Nov. 13th and they will pick them up.  Do NOT have anything in them. Otherwise you are free to use them as sleds come first snowfall.

New Recycling Program Starts!

Recycling just got easier.  You have received a new 48-gallon blue recycling cart with wheels and a lid.  It will replace the two bins (blue and yellow) you were using.  Your new single stream cart can be used for all your recyclables.  Just place them into the big blue cart and roll it to the curb for collection.

It is not necessary to sort the containers, but please rinse them. Lids can be left on containers.

• Aluminum/steel cans
• Glass bottles and jars
• #1 thru #7, no #6 plastics such as:
• Milk jugs
• Soda bottles
• Shampoo bottles
• Personal hygiene containers
• Condiment bottles
• Newspapers
• Magazines
• Junk mail
• Office paper
• Other paper fiber-based material should be clean and dry with no plastic bags or strings

The city will no longer be picking up recyclables in the two bins.

All recyclable items can also be dropped off at the self-service Recycling Drop-off Center located in the rear parking lot of 975 Pennsylvania.

MOVIE NIGHT IS BACK!

This Friday, September 28th, University Heights will be showing A Night at the Museum at the vacant lot.  Tentative time is 7pm.  Bring a blanket, some bug spray and popcorn!  All Ages!  (not just kids!)
